Aliases of 9/11 Figures Revealed


This is a list of aliases used to refer to people involved in US intelligence operations against al-Qaeda in run-up to 9/11. The aliases appear mostly in 9/11 Commission report and the Department of Justice inspector general’s report. A lot of the aliases were revealed at the Zacarias Moussaoui trial, others in Lawrence Wright’s patchy The Looming Tower.

Al S (9/11 CR) – Ali Soufan, the FBI agent that headed the USS Cole bombing investigation
Chad (DoJ OIG) – Craig Donnachie, a New York FBI agent involved in preliminary discussions about the failed search for Khalid Almihdhar in August 2001
Charles (DoJ OIG) – FBI Minneapolis agent Chris Briese
Dave (9/11 CR) – CIA analyst Clark Shannon, who withheld information from the FBI about Almihdhar and Nawaf Alhazmi; “Peter” in DoJ OIG
Don (DoJ OIG) – Chief of the FBI’s radical fundamentalist unit Dave Frasca, champion of Zacarias Moussaoui
Donna (DoJ OIG) – FBI analyst Dina Corsi, who appears to have deliberately sabotaged the hunt for Almihdhar; “Jane” in 9/11 CR
Dwight (DoJ OIG) – Doug Miller, an FBI agent detailed to Alec Station, who drafted a cable warning the FBI about Almihdhar that was blocked by Tom Wilshire
Ellen (DoJ OIG) – FBI analyst Elizabeth Matson, involved in Phoenix memo
Gary – FBI Minneapolis agent Greg Jones
Henry (DoJ OIG) – FBI agent Harry Samit, who arrested Zacarias Moussaoui with three other agents
Jack – FBI unit chief Joe Manarang, who urged Moussaoui not be arrested
Jason (DoJ OIG) – John Liguori
John (9/11 CR, DoJ OIG, ZM) – Tom Wilshire, deputy chief of Alec Station from early 1999 to May 2001, then a consultant to the FBI, involved in every serious failure before 9/11
Jane (9/11 CR) – FBI analyst Dina Corsi, who appears to have deliberately sabotaged the hunt for Almihdhar; “Donna” in DoJ OIG
Jane (DoJ OIG) – FBI analyst Jennifer Maitner, involved in Phoenix memo; “Jen M” in 9/11 CR
Jay (DoJ OIG) – Long-time FBI agent Jack Cloonan, involved in Phoenix memo
Jen M (9/11 CR) – Presumably FBI analyst Jennifer Maitner, involved in Bush’s August 6 PDB and the Phoenix Memo; “Jane” in DoJ OIG
Malcolm (DoJ OIG) – Mark Rossini, FBI agent detailed to Alec Station
Martin – FBI agent Michael Maltbie of the Radical Fundamentalist Unit, he fought valiantly to stop Minneapolis agents searching Moussaoui’s computer
Mary (9/11 CR, DoJ OIG) – FBI agent Margaret Gillespie, who was detailed to Alec Station and found that Almihdhar was in US in late August 2001
Megan – Margaret Magill, an attorney consulted about the Moussaoui case
Peter (DoJ OIG) – CIA analyst Clark Shannon, who withheld information from the FBI about Almihdhar and Alhazmi; “Dave” in 9/11 CR
Patrick (DoJ OIG) – Peter Robustelli
Randall (DoJ OIG) – FBI agent Russell Fincher, involved in Cole investigation
Richard (9/11 CR) – Richard Blee, chief of Alec Station from summer 1999 to late 2001
Richard (DoJ OIG) – FBI agent Robert Fuller, the rookie FBI agent who somehow managed not to find Almihdhar before 9/11
Rob (DoJ OIG) – FBI acting Bin Laden Unit chief Rodney Middleton
Robin (DoJ OIG) – FBI agent Rita Flack, helper of Moussaoui
Scott (DoJ OIG) – Steve Bongardt, an FBI agent involved in Cole bombing investigation who argued with Corsi over Almihdhar in summer of 2001; “Steve B” in 9/11 CR
Steve B (9/11 CR) – Steve Bongardt, an FBI agent involved in Cole bombing investigation who argued with Corsi over Almihdhar in summer of 2001; “Scott” in DoJ OIG
Susan (DoJ OIG) – FBI lawyer Sherry Sabol, whose advice about the search for Almihdhar was allegedly misrepresented by Corsi
Tim (DoJ OIG) – Tom Ainora
Wesley (DoJ OIG) – William Koch
