9/11 Commission Documents about KSM (updated 17 March 2010)

This post lists documents related to the 9/11 Commission’s investigation of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (KSM). The documents have been posted at the 9/11 Document Archive at Scribd. I am reading through them gradually and highlighting interesting information. This post will be updated continuously.

(-) A 3-page March 2004 9/11 Commission memo about a briefing given to them by prosecutors and FBI officials involved in the prosecution of Zacarias Moussaoui. The prosecutors give details of what they know and ask the commission for any information they have. At one point they say that, according to 9/11 coordinator Ramzi bin al-Shibh, there were to have been five pilots in the plot. In addition, there is a description of an intercepted communication between Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and bin al-Shibh from around August 2001.

(-) A letter from attorney Ron Motley saying that the 9/11 Commission’s conclusions about the relationship between al-Qaeda on the one hand and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and Ramzi Yousef on the other are erroneous.

(-) A letter from a German judge involved in the trial of alleged 9/11 conspirator Mounir El Motassadeq to the 9/11 Commission. The judge wants documentation the 9/11 Commission has obtained about the interrogations of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and Ramzi bin al-Shibh.

Also a letter from the German ambassaor to the US saying that a German official can testify before the commission under certain circumstances.

(-) A September 2003 report by Associated Press about the interrogations of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed from the 9/11 Commission files. The report has a handwritten note by commission staffer Raj De expressing surprise at the report: “What the hell?! Maybe we should have the AP write our monograph – they clearly have a better POC (point of contact) at the CIA!”

Also a withdrawal notice for 429 pages of documents about detainees.

(-) A March 2004 article from the Washington Times about a recent Sunday Times story using inside information about the confessions of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

Also some brief 9/11 Commission e-mails about the article and a withdrawal notice for 3 pages of notes about detainees.

(-) A letter from author Peter Lance to 9/11 Commission Chairman Tom Kean. Lance criticizes the commission’s hiring of former prosecutor Dieter Snell, who Lance says should be a witness for the commission (due to his terrorism prosecutions), not an investigator. Lance also discusses the links between the Bojinka plot of Ramzi Yousef and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and the September 11 attacks.

Withdrawal Notices

(-) A withdrawal notice for 13 pages of interview summaries about alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. The notes were taken by the 9/11 Congressional Inquiry during interviews of five FBI and CIA officials.

(-) Two withdrawal notices for 9/11 commission notes about alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, based on FBI and Joint Congressional Inquiry materials.

(-) A withdrawal notice for a 150-page intelligence report about alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, apparently about his communications.

(-) A withdrawal notice for 127 pages of FBI 302 reports from 1998-2002 on alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

(-) A withdrawal notice for one page of notes on alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

(-) Two withdrawal notices for notes made by the 9/11 Commission during a trip to the attorneys Motley Rice in March 2003. Some of the notes concern alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

(-) A withdrawal notice for 118 pages of cables about alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed from 2003-2004.

(-) A withdrawal notice for 17 pages of intelligence cables about alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (KSM) from 2003-2004.
